Bought this book for a friend of mine in China and she loves it. The pictures are lovely -- beautiful colors and nicely presented. The instructions on soap making are easy to follow. My friend was on TV talking about soap making. She DID NOT mention this book while on TV. In no way did she advertise this book! I fact, she didn't have this book when she was on TV.

I bought this book for natural soap recipes- and I agree with a few other reviews, not all the ingredients used are natural. I was hoping for some recipes with exotic cold pressed oils, but the recipes use common oils and butters, some good, some not good at all. Pros: the photos are great and so is the spiral bound design. Some of the recipes are simple. Some of the ingredients used are common and easy to find. Some of the recipes look really fun! Cons: I recognized a great many of the designs from the Amy Warden Soap Challenge and the original artisan soap makers were not given credit (design ideas are not exclusive to the Soap Queen). You're gonna have to spend a WHOLE lot of money buying the molds she uses for the recipes and the equipment. Instead of telling you how many ounces a recipe makes- you get how many bars based on her molds (a pain in the butt for a newbie to figure out using your own molds.) More than half the book is for advanced soap makers. Some recipes call for food items like potato or cucumber or banana- however there are powdered extracts that would be much safer to use IF you were selling these soaps (as far as I know the FDA does not approve raw food in soaps). The book is a copycat of other artisans original works and really instead of using ordinary easy to find molds it compels you to go to her company to buy the equipment (or buy it cheaper here on Amazon :) SOME THINGS YOU NEED:You need a silicone log mold, a wooden slab mold, a individual silicone cavity mold, a silicone slab mold (smaller), and a long log mold with dividers, and round molds, embellishment molds, natural colorants, oxides, tons of essential oils, heating pad, section tools, sodium lactate (in all the recipes), cupcake mold, stamp, rubber mallet, sealable tea bags, herbs, bubble wrap, cookie cutters, powder sifter, chopsticks, frosting bag and tip... it goes on and on. This is not for the beginning soap maker that has limited funds and space (some recipes require the freezer over night). The simplest recipes are the Olive Oil Brine, and Oatmeal Soap for Babies. I give it three stars for the photos, layout, time and effort, the attempt of making it somewhat NATURAL SOAPMAKING, and the spiral binder, and because she used other artisans designs and not her own (even though she doesn't credit them).

This book was highly recommended by many soap makers as the "premier" book to read. While I was excited when I started out reading it it quickly became obvious that this is NOT for beginners. I had to laugh about the starting out point of utilizing things you already have so you don't have to spend much.......that was until I started reading the recipes. There literally was not ONE that I could make! I either didn't have the proper equipment OR ingredients to make anything in this book. It was well written but clearly for someone much more advanced and someone that had all the different molds, butters, oils and "essential oils" to use the recipes provided. I'm of a mind to just send it back but will keep it around for "some day" when I can afford all the "stuff" you need to really get use out of the book. You are better off just watching YouTube video's produced by the author....they are free and much more suited to the beginner soap maker.

I'm brand new to soap making. I decided to get into it because I bought a house that has a huge (empty) workshop. I downloaded and read the kindle samples of ALL the top (8) books on soapmaking. I watched a half dozen videos, including some by this author. I bought ONLY this book and a scattering of supplies for cold process and one melt-and-pour. (Never again on "mp" soap!) My first cold process soap is on its second week of curing and I'm ready to try a new recipe. I re-ordered supplies. Please know I don't know this Anne-Marie, but she had the best prices on pigments and such, so I ordered all that stuff from her. (Although I got other stuff from her two main competitors, like some oils) This company is OBVIOUSLY run by a woman who really loves this whole thing. Joseph Ben-David died twenty-five years ago, in January 1986. An eminent sociologist of science, and a co-founder of this sub-discipline, he was only sixty-five years old. Few social scientists are remembered after they die and can no longer parlay their influence into the goods of this world for colleagues and acquaintances. This was not Ben-David’s fate. His work continues to be taught and referred to by scholars spread far and wide (in terms of both countries and disciplines). His students never forgot him, his books were republished, and his essays appeared in new collections.

Ben-David’s legacy includes ideas and ideals. Its central tenet is the autonomy of science, its right—and duty—to be value-free. Scholarship oriented to any goal other than the accumulation of objective knowledge about empirical reality, for him, was science no longer and did not have its authority. In this light, the life of scholarship was one of moral dedication, with nothing less than the fate of liberal democratic society depending on it. And for science to thrive, the university, its home, had to be the embodiment of the cardinal virtue of this society: the virtue of civility.

In the spirit of Ben-David, believing that scholarly debate advances common good, and rational discourse wins whichever way arguments in it are settled, this festschrift debates such core issues as the nature of science, its changing definition and position in Western society, the forms of organization optimal for scientific creativity, and the ability of the research university to foster scientific growth, while also performing its educational role.
